THE MOUNTAINS

Margherita 5109m, Uganda

Not just a pizza topping, it's also a remote and unusual equatorial alpine climb. Thick rainforest leads up to the infamous 'vertical bog', topped off with the biggest glaciers in Africa and a seriously icy summit several days' walk from the nearest dirt road. This is real Dr.Livingstone country, where it pours with rain nearly all the time. Gorillas in the mist was set hereabouts, so we should fit right in.

Mt.Kenya 5199m, Kenya.

Most visitors content themselves with a walk up a minor satellite summit, but the highest point Batian crowns a vast cliffy pyramid, and can only be reached by challenging climbing at high altitude. Our chosen route the Southwest Ridge involves a couple of days of fairly difficult rock; then we've just got to get down again! It'll be no picnic…

Kilimanjaro 5895m, Tanzania.

The only summit of the three that regularly features in charity events, bagging 'Kili' simply requires the gumption to trudge uphill for a few days (rather than proper climbing with ropes as on our other peaks). Yet thanks to the debilitating effect of high altitude the tallest mountain in Africa is never going to be a walk in the park. The summit will be a great spot for those celebratory team photos.
